Description
Summary:Considerations of mercy as a theological concept have until now received little attention in patristic studies. This article tries to investigate the term mercy in the thinking and acting of John Chrysostom, to whom the Byzantine biographer George of Alexandria ascribes the epithet »of almsgiving« or indeed »of mercy«. After some preliminary remarks on the biography of Chrysostom, his preaching as presbyter in Antioch is examined on the one hand, and then his pastoral care as bishop of Constantinople on the other. To sum up, the notion of eleēmosynē (almsgiving or rather mercy and charity) is a fundamental aspect of the theology of John Chrysostom. To be merciful is for Chrysostom the purpose of being a Christian and of being human. Moreover, mercy and charity are for him an essential trait of God.
