Summary: | Behavior, psychodynamic and humanistic psychology are just preparations for an even higher »fourth psychology«, which is transpersonal and based beyond human needs and interests - so Abraham Maslow, one of the founder of transpersonal psychology. This new kind of psychotherapy assumes that we need something greater than ourselves, because without the transcendence and the Holy we get sick, violent and after all even hopeless. This statement makes clear how great the claim is. Transpersonal psychology promises a universal cure and intends to heal our deepest wounds. How can this happen that just in the wake of Sigmund Freud and after all the critical voices against religion, the spiritual dimension becomes a central therapeutic quality? The article uncovers the history of ideas of transpersonal psychology and describes his concrete practice. The author examines the theoretical foundations and reflects basic terms of the concept like I, ego, self and consciousness. Finally, the author formulates critical requests to this new concept - both psychological and theological side - without overlooking the legitimate challenges. |
