Summary: | This study examined attitudes of African American Pastors and clergy members regarding same-sex marriage and how or whether they attempt to offer Pastoral Care and Counseling and Affirmative Counseling. A 65-item survey was administered to 96 African American clergy participants. The survey took into account their theological understanding of homosexuality and same-sex marriage, in the context of biblical interpretation, morality, and civil rights, as well as the vast diversity of African American clergy members and the realization that not all members of the Black Church are cohesive and consistent in their biblical interpretation of scriptural texts. The surveys indicated that there is a wide discrepancy among beliefs and willingness to engage in affirmative counseling and revealed a hesitancy in disclosing personal and theological beliefs for fear of being politically ostracized by the congregation and culture. The purpose of the study was to bring some extent of understanding and cohesion to this already divided community. |
