Description
Summary:In this contribution the author provides an overview to research on the book of Ben Sira in the past 15 years. Special emphasis is given to the textual situation of this book, which is unique among writ-ings with some association to the biblical canon. Although it is clearly based on a work by a single author, its transmission history led to a textual situation that can best be characterized as multiple works in different languages (most importantly Hebrew, Greek, Syriac, Latin). Current projects that focus on this textual plurality or on single versions of the book are described. This is followed by a n overview of current commentaries. The third section presents thematic research projects that cover topics concerning scribal culture and the use of scripture in the book of Ben Sira, Ben Sira’s approach to sex and gender, to generosity, and to foreign nations. The book of Ben Sira appears to be a focal point both of textual research relevant both to the book itself and to biblical texts as well research on the culture of Hellenistic Judaism.
