Summary: | In November 2017, to commemorate the start of the Protestant Reformation(s), the SBL’s Theological Interpretation of Scripture seminar convened an ecumenical panel of scholars to offer papers on the theme of “Paul and Justification: Reading Galatians 500 Years Later.” This brief introductory essay first discusses the panel itself. It then sets the panel’s session in context by considering the nature and practice of theological interpretation as articulated by the SBL unit bearing that name, by some leading proponents, and by the present author. A succinct summary of theological interpretation is offered: “Theological interpretation focuses on Scripture’s theological content, contexts, and consequences.” After showing how this summary connects to the focus ofthe panel’s session, the essay summarizes each of the four papers and the formal response to them. The essay concludes with some reflections on theological interpretation in light of the papers. |
