Description
Summary:This study examines the denunciation of Shebna and exaltation of Eliakim in Isaiah 22:15-25 in light of their literary context. The perplexity principally investigated lies in the fact that the Israelite official Shebna's severe condemnation and vivid demise contrasts strongly with his successor Eliakim's solemn investiture yet abrupt and unexplained removal. The suggestion is made that the term)#m in v. 25 represents the collective guilt-burden on the people of Israel, laid upon Eliakim and atoned for by his own death. The argument hinges on four points: a context-determined interpretation of)#m, Eliakim's exalted elevation and absence of obvious transgression, and the announcement of a collective guilt atonement by death in 22:1-14. Such an interpretation, it is argued, is contextually fitting and contributes to a sense of eschatological hope which becomes more elaborated in later parts of the Book of Isaiah.
