Résumé: | The people in Theodor Fontane’s work are suffering, erring, sinful, constrained by conventions, and troubled by fate – in other words: his human beings are authentic human beings. And yet Fontane describes his characters from an at least sympathetic, sometimes even hopeful perspective. Christianly expressed one can formulate that the predominant thought of Christianity, the doctrine of justification, constitutes the background of Fontane’s characters. This article examines on the basis of the novels »Frau Jenny Treibel«, »Effi Briest«, and »Der Stechlin« Fontane’s ideal, with whom he contrasted the Prussian church in his day and according to which the mankind is loved out of divine grace despite all of its numerous and incorrigible flaws and the people themselves are ought to encounter their fellow human beings, bearing in mind their own humanity, kindheartedly and compassionately. |
