Summary: | This paper aims at an articulation of authority and power as elements that are constitutive of the human condition. The question of power and authority is social and political, but also intrinsically theological. Therefore, the paper underlines the relational nature of both authority and power, analysis the dangers associated with its degradation, affirms its redeemability and, consequently, its inevitability for both Church and State. Our ultimate goal, however, is to assert how in order to be salvific, power and authority have to be limited, that is, structurally contained. While in the political society this happens in terms of a deep regard for the Constitution and the consequent Rule of Law, in the Church it remains inseparable from personal and faithful obedience to the incarnated Word of God. |
