Description
Summary:"Not to acknowledge any favor is a sign of ignorance The knowledge of the Truth and cognizance of God is but to give each man his due Shabistarī, Garden of Mystery The contents of this book are based on the conference Sufis and Mullahs: Sufis and Their Opponents in the Persianate World, organized in 2016 by Dr. Leonard Lewisohn and myself at the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies (IAIS) of the University of Exeter. I am grateful to Mr. Mahmoud-Reza Fazeli for his unconditional support of the conference. Indeed, many friends and scholars assisted us with this project, the last publication of Dr. Lewisohn, who died in August 2018. The compilation and publication of these essays is the result of a collaboration of a number of friends and institutions: First of all, I would like to express my utmost gratitude to Mrs. Jane Lewisohn without whose effort and support it would not have been possible to publish this work. My profound thanks go also to Dr. Saeed Naghashian, Associate Professor of Art in Azad University in Tehran, for contributing many stunning pieces of calligraphy selected from anti-clerical poems collected by Dr. Lewisohn. And I am beholden to Mr. Terry Graham for the astute and poetic translation of these poems. I am also much obliged to Dr. Eliza Tasbihi's kind hand in scanning the Turkish transliterations within the work. In addition I owe a great debt to Steven Scholl and to Lisa Cutting for reviewing and editing the volume. I would also like to thank the staff at Exeter University for their support. Moreover I thank the Samuel Jordan Center for Persian Studies and Culture at the University of California, Irvine, for publishing this book and Steven Scholl for designing it. This current edition is fittingly and lovingly dedicated to Dr. Lewisohn, my mentor and academic father. Reza Tabandeh Toronto, February, 2020"--
