| Summary: | If the patristic age, especially in the monastic environment, offers valuable hints for discernment -recalled and put in order during the Middle Ages -, it is in particular since the Modern Age that a theory on discernment has been actually developed, refining methods and rules. The essay presents two emblematic masters in the art of spiritual discernment, which they have performed all along their lives and have passed on to later generations: Ignatius of Loyola, a true spiritual guide, whose Book of Spiritual Exercises, almost five centuries later, still is an unmatched instrument for spiritual discernment; Francis de Sales, keen observer of the human heart, whose teaching has deeply influenced the Christian discernment of human conscience, as clearly shown by his works, especially his many letters, dealing with spiritual direction. |
