| Summary: | John Paul II left the Church with a vast and profound Marian heritage, of which the encyclical Redemptoris Mater (25th March 1987), certainly constitutes the most authoritative document, the most extensive and articulated text, the compendium, and the pure synthesis. The encyclical is an accurate meditation on the Word of God, on the theological reflection of the Second Vatican Council on Mary, on the doctrine of the Eastern and Western Fathers. Pope Wojtyła, after a brief introduction, develops in an original way three great themes previously indicated by the council: Mary in the Mystery of Christ, in which through a biblical meditation the pope develops a Mariology intimately connected with Christology; The Mother of God at the Center of the Pilgrim Church on a journey in which he shows how the journey of the Church in time and space is modelled on that of Mary and in which it deals extensively with the theme of ecumenism; Maternal Mediation in which the pope takes up the term "mediation" that the council had placed in perspective, nevertheless remaining linked to the doctrine of chapter VIII of LG on the subject and inserting a happy underlining the role of the Holy Spirit in the work of the mediation of Christ and in the maternal function of Mary towards humanity. Characteristic and original features of the encyclical are, among others: the new approach to the dogma of the Immaculate Conception; the pilgrimage of the faith of Mary, mirror of the pilgrimage of the faith of the Church; the impulse given to Marian spirituality and to the spirituality of entrustment in particular; attention to history and its eschatological fulfilment which finds a constant presence in Mary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] Giovanni Paolo II ha lasciato alla Chiesa una vasta e profonda eredità mariana, di cui l'enciclica Redmptoris Mater (25 marzo 1987), costituisce certamente il documento più autorevole, il testo più esteso ed articolato, il compendio, la sintesi organica. L'enciclica è una meditazione accurata sulla Parola di Dio, sulla riflessione teologica del concilio Vaticano II su Maria, sulla dottrina dei Padri d'Oriente e d'Occidente. Papa Wojtyła, dopo una breve introduzione, sviluppa in maniera originale tre grandi tematiche già indicate dal concilio: Maria nel mistero di Cristo, in cui attraverso una meditazione biblica il papa sviluppa una mariologia intimamente connessa con la cristologia; La Madre di Dio al centro della Chiesa in cammino in cui mostra come il cammino della Chiesa nel tempo e nello spazio si modelli su quello di Maria e in cui affronta diffusamente il tema dell'ecumenismo; La Mediazione materna in cui il papa riprende il termine "mediazione" che il concilio aveva relativizzato, rimanendo, tuttavia, legato alla dottrina del capitolo VIII della LG sull'argomento e inserendo una felice sottolineatura sul ruolo dello Spirito Santo nell'opera della mediazione di Cristo e nella funzione materna di Maria verso gli uomini. Tratti caratteristici ed originali dell'enciclica risultano, fra gli altri: l'approccio nuovo al dogma dell'Immacolata; la peregrinazione della fede di Maria, specchio della peregrinazione della fede della Chiesa; l'impulso dato alla spiritualità mariana e alla spiritualità dell'affidamento in particolare; l'attenzione alla storia e al suo compimento escatologico che trova in Maria una presenza costante.
