Summary: | Through the review of two important conservative newspapers, El Diario Ilustrado and La Unión of Valparaíso, this paper seeks to show how the deep economic and social 1931-1932 crisis in Chile and the reception of the social doctrine of the Church contained in the social encyclicals, generated a division in the Conservative Party. The traditional leadership that remained faithfull to the principles of classical liberalism faced a group integrated by part of the youth and by provincial conservatives that sought to apply the social doctrine of the Church. In this crisis, the 1938 split of the party was pre-announced. |
