Summary: | This article presents a reading of Pontoppidan’s Lucky Per in comparison with the theological anthropology of Søren Kierkegaard. To this end, the article follows Kierkegaard’s conception of despair as developed in The Sickness unto Death and the act of belief as illustrated in Fear and Trembling. Pontoppidan knew the authorship of Kierkegaard well. This article indicates that Pontoppidan in writing Lucky Per was heavily inspired by the development of Self as presented by Kierkegaard.
