| Summary: | It is widely accepted that Masada’s Northern Palace had a single entrance located at the upper terrace. This design has two inherent drawbacks: (i) a basic contradiction with the Roman architectural convention of not mixing private and public areas in a palace; and, (ii) an unreasonable procedure of filling the palace’s water pits built on the middle terrace through a manual operation via the upper terrace. The reconstruction presented here resolves these issues by noting the possibility of an additional entrance directly into the middle terrace via a horizontal bypass located along the western path leading to the water gate. Il est largement admis que le Palais Nord de Massada avait une seule entrée située à la terrasse supérieure. Cette conception présente deux inconvénients inhérents: (i) une contradiction fondamentale avec la convention romaine d’architecture de ne pas mélanger les espaces privés et publics dans un palais; et (ii) une procédure déraisonnable de remplissage des puits du palais de la terrasse médiane grâce à un fonctionnement manuel depuis la terrasse supérieure. La reconstruction présentée ici permet de résoudre ces problèmes en soulignant la possibilité d’une entrée supplémentaire directement dans la terrasse médiane à l’aide d’un passage de contournement horizontal situé à l’ouest le long d’un sentier menant à la porte des eaux. |
