| Summary: | This essay attempts a fresh reading of Psalm 82 as a resource for Christian thought and practice. Characteristic premodern and modern readings – that the psalm is an admonition to human judges, and that the psalm depicts a move from polytheism to henotheism or monotheism – are briefly noted, by way of setting the context for suggesting that the psalm can be read as offering a conceptual analysis of the Hebrew term for deity, 'elohim. Read thus, the psalm depicts justice as constitutive of the nature of true deity. Attention is also given to the implications of readers/hearers being given access to a 'heavenly' scenario. Cet article tente une nouvelle lecture du Psaume 82 en tant que ressource pour la pensée et la pratique chrétiennes. Des lectures prémodernes et modernes caractéristiques – que le psaume est un avertissement aux juges humains et que le psaume dépeint le passage du polythéisme à l’hénothéisme ou au monothéisme – sont brièvement rappelées, afin de définir le contexte permettant de suggérer que le psaume peut être lu comme offrant une analyse conceptuelle du terme hébreu pour divinité, 'elohim. Ainsi lu, le psaume décrit la justice comme constitutive de la nature de la vraie divinité. Une attention est également accordée aux conséquences pour les lecteurs/auditeurs d’accéder à un scénario «céleste». |
