Summary: | In September 2018, the Holy See signed a provisional agreement with the Chinese government relating to the process of the appointment of bishops. This contribution locates that agreement in its historical context, evaluates its application just over a year after its signing, and sketches out some angles. It sheds light on the positive and necessary character of the agreement while emphasising that it operates within the context of a hardening of China's religious policies. Dialogue and trust have been reestablished, but the way forward remains narrow and risky. |
