| Summary: | Datation systems are often overlooked in the field of ancient history and epigraphy, and this is the case for Northern Arabia in the Persian period. Nevertheless, the small epigraphic documentation points to different traditions of dating official and private documents. In the oasis of Tayma, the usual Aramaic formulas are used, but North Arabian elements are also present in the habit of dating by major events. In Dedan/Al-'Ula, the Lihyanite inscriptions are characterised by standard year numbering along an eponymous system reflecting political changes. The Minaean colony of Dedan conserves its traditional system and occasionally refers to major events. |
