Summary:The agreement of Tendai Perfect teachings of the Lotus Sutra and Esoteric Buddhism is one of the hallmarks of Japanese Tendai. I trace this idea from Indian sources such as the Dazhidulun to China in works by Zhiyi, Zhanran, and Yixing, finally ending in Japan with a number of figures such as Saichō and Annen.
