Description
Summary:Conciliarity or synodality is the attribute, which makes the 14 autocephalous Orthodox churches one church. Since the 8th century no more council was held that would have been accepted as ›ecumen-ical‹. But latest with the beginning of the 20th century new ques-tions developed in the Orthodox Church, which could be solved only with a common synod. Therefore, since the 1920s efforts were made to prepare a pan-Orthodox council, which finally took place in June 2016 in Crete, however with last-minute refusals of four Orthodox churches. The present article retraces the pre-history of the meeting, presents the decisions of the Council and reflects on its significance. From an inner-Orthodox perspective the Council of Crete reflected old tensions, which show a gap between Slavonic and Greek Orthodoxy. From an ecumenical perspective it needs to be put on record positively, that the Council confirms clearly the significance of the ecumenical movement and the Orthodox engagement in it, although in some places also the inner-Orthodox anti-ecumenical voices can be heard.
