Summary:This article considers the state of the art of research in Islamic religious education in Germany from a perspective of Protestant religious education and, in this sense, an external perspective. This aim is not pursued in the shape of a report on existing publications but with general considerations concerning the theory or philosophy of science. Different approaches as well as different thematic fields of religious education research are discussed as well as the understanding of religious education as an academic discipline.
