| Summary: | Giuseppe Dossetti was the ideological and political leader who, in force of a substantial, albeit not formal, mandate of the Vatican, negotiated and signed the deal with the communist leader Togliatti, about a special relation between Church and State. The art. 7 of the italian Constitution sanctioned a privileged position for the Catholic Church in exchange of the religious peace in Italy and the acceptance of democracy by the ecclesiastical hierarchy. But, during an evolution of forty years, Dossetti changed his mind towards the prevalence of the spiritual and religious dimensions based on equal treatment of all Confessions (art. 8 Const.). |
