Description
Summary:This study takes into consideration the theme of wine and a number of its features in the Renaissance and Baroque periods: as a religious constituent - exemplified by the image of the vineyard designed by Matthaus Greuter in 1616 - as an aspect of Jesuit missionary activity, and as nourishment, according to humanistic notions of right measure and optimal quality. Specifically, the study identifies these themes in an unpublished manuscript from 1549-54 in Fondo Gesuitico 417 at the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale, Rome, reproduced here: the manuscript contains a list of the best Italian wines favored by Pope Paul III, along with the vines and methods used for making them.
