| Summary: | In many descriptions of dream visions of Saints in Byzantine hagiography an allusion appears to consider the scene a mere dream (onar) or rather a real vision (hypar). Even though this opposition was inherited from classical literature - it was created in Homeric poetry – its use was further developed in Byzantine Saints' lives and collections of miracles as a rhetorical device to describe a nightly apparition of a Saint. Our article aims to analyse the three different formulae used to express the opposition between the two terms (hypar, uk onar / uk onar, all' hypar / onar, mallon hypar) and also the different contexts in which these formulae are found. |
