Summary: | Stephen R. Haynes is professor of religious studies at Rhodes College and has become a leading public voice from within the International Bonhoeffer Society. His most recent book, The Battle for Bonhoeffer, involves a move from discussing Bonhoeffer's life as phenomenonor a legacy to finding our lives bound up with a Bonhoeffer moment. The book, then, suggests that studying history and a life such as Bonhoeffer's, when done well, requires not only rigorous historical study but also the engagement of our lives in the present historical moment. The interviewcovers the topics of the use of Bonhoeffer by both political left and right, the use and understanding of being in a "Bonhoeffer moment," and Bonhoeffer's understanding of the term discipleship and how it relates to the American Evangelical understanding. |
