Description
Summary:As an antidote to contemporary presentism, this short essay will explore a few of the intricacies of the multidimensional world of early American religious history. Perhaps this will serve in some small way to counteract the poison of religious partisanship that has infected the popularview of America's religious founding. The essay will explore the variety and breadth of religious experience characteristic of early American history, then will suggest how the multilayered dimensions of American religiosity have produced the rich tapestry of American religious cultureincluding its Protestant, Roman Catholic, Native American, and African American experience. In his effort to take a wider look at an early colonial history, the author hopes to broaden the discussion of the nation's religiosity to include the perspectives of minority voices that areoften overlooked by current debates on the issue.
