Summary: | The dance (choreia) takes an important place in education in Plato’s Laws. Thanks to the rhythm, dance substitutes order to child gesticulations and disorder and brings calming but also structuring effects to troubled souls. Dance is a gift of the gods. For a while, dance enchants the painful daily life of men during religious feasts. But if Plato places choreia at the center of his city, it is because dance becomes a powerful help to stabilise politically the community, with its capacity to create order. |
