Ces spéculations connaissent un paroxysme lors de la chute de Constantinople en 1453, proche de l'an 7000 de la Création. Les efforts pour mettre en récit l'histoire universelle depuis la Création jusqu'à la fin des temps, et pour situer dans ce schéma les catastrophes vécues, ont pour objectif ultime (au-delà de toute récupération politique) de rassurer le peuple chrétien en insérant les événements chaotiques qui les frappent dans un scénario cohérent, devant aboutir in fine à la Parousie et à l'éternité. Arising due to historical catastrophes, Byzantine Apocalyptic narratives place these catastrophes in a structured time running from Creation to the end of the world. These speculations reached a peak when Constantinople fell in 1453, near the year 7000 of Creation. Efforts to write a universal history from Creation to the end of time and to locate the catastrophes experienced within this scheme aimed ultimately (beyond all efforts at political recuperation) at reassuring Christians by putting the chaotic events that befell them into a coherent scenario that was to lead in fine to the Parousia and Eternity. |
