| Summary: | Longinus' treatise "On the Sublime" sets out the main aspects of the sublime in ancient literature: for him, it is the expression of transcendence through the communication of profound feelings that have a transforming effect on the reader. Many of the same elements defined by Longinus are also to be found in the Gospel of Matthew. Through mountain scenes, sky signs, and sea and land turbulence, Matthew's Gospel depicts the sublime as it reveals itself particularly within the natural world. Creation thus finds a place in the revealing of heaven's reign in this Gospel, pointing to the eschatological fulfillment of all things in the Risen Christ. |
