Description
Summary:"Megillat Yuḥasin" is an as yet unpublished manuscript, located in the Ivan F. and Seema Boesky family library of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America (Mss. 1379 and 1380). The text is attributed to Mendel Landsberg (1786-1866) although this is quite doubtful. However, there are some arguments in favor of Landberg's authorship. The date of composition may be 1834. "Megillat Yuḥasin", in both copies, is a travesty written as a talmudic parody, followed by various commentators and including a scurrilous attack on a rich and powerful resident of Kremnitz in the 19th Century, whom the author tries to present as an illegitimate son, ignorant and even a rascal. This article illuminates the motif and structure of the parody and includes a literary analysis of the satiric qualities, a close interpretation of selected paragraphs with special attention to the historical, linguistic and literary background. It also discusses in detail problems of identification of authorship. The article concludes with an evaluation of "Megillat Yuḥasin's" aesthetic level and its place in the history of Modern Hebrew polemics and satire. The article is an introduction to a scientific edition of "Megillat Yuḥasin" which is to appear in the near future.
