Summary: | This article attempts to determine what type of knowledge and understanding regarding female fertility is reflected in rabbinic-talmudic sources, while comparing it with the scientific knowledge we possess today. The main topics considered are the possibility for a woman to conceive (or “re-conceive”) at a young age, during pregnancy, while lactating, and at an old age. A significant attempt is made to decipher rabbinic ideas about the possibility of a woman conceiving during the various stages of her menstrual cycle. Regarding this last topic, a comparison to Christian sources of the time is also made. The article shows that various opinions on all these topics can be found and that current medical knowledge can help us understand these concepts and their history. |
