| Summary: | Is there a correlation between religion or denomination and natural science and technology? Both studies on the 'Catholic educational deficit' in the middle of the 20th century and the old 'Black Legend' seem to point to it. The condemnation of the Copernican world view by the Church's magisterium in the 17th century is also central to the foundation myth of the natural sciences. On the other hand, historical research during recent decades into the Roman Inquisition suggest caution. This article looks at motives and criteria. Research findings give little basis for positing an inherent blanket hostility to science on the part of the Church. |
