This article traces the origins and subsequent development of the Umbanda religion, and analyses its present social and religious characteristics, for it is an excellent field for studying Afro-Catholic syncretism in Brazil and also for testing the definition which R. B. suggests for this phenomenon in a study entitled « Collective memory and sociology of odd-jobs » (1970). |
