"In biblical literature, fire is an indicator of divine status. Fiery motifs include storm and war imagery, and occasional references to cultic fires of sacrifice. In some narratives, fire embodies the localized presence of Yhwh. In other narratives, fire represents divine agency working at a distance from the divine presence. This is true both for historical narratives and for descriptions of the cult"--
