Description
Summary:The threefold form of the Eucharist (or the body of the risen Christ, the body of the Church on the move, and the body of those who have faced death) is the theological and cultural background to the architectural construction of the Basilica of Assisi and of many other ancient churches; this also allowed the schematic clarification of the space celebrated in the Upper, Lower Church and successively of the body of the Saint of Assisi. The celebration of the Eucharist, in turn, holds together the complex iconographic programme which, although affected by the continual variations attributable to a certain emphasis on the charism of Francis and the Franciscan Order, and although with some later 'devotional' relaxation, finds the its unity in the communion of saints, or in the permanent sacramental realization of the one Church, celestial and terrestrial, which presided over by the Risen One and animated by his Spirit of holiness, is on the way to the Father.
