Summary: | Admont, Stiftsbibliothek, Cod. 410 (s. xiimed) contains on its final several folia an unpublished sermon-commentary on I Maccabees that may provide some important insights into mid-twelfth century responses to the Crusades, particularly following the dramatic failure of the Second Crusade (1146-48). The text is appended to Admont's only copy of the Passio Thiemonis, the story of the Salzburg archbishop captured and martyred during the Crusade of 1101 and whose cult had begun to spread in Bavaria in the wake of the Second Crusade. In addition to providing an edition of the sermon, this article theorizes that whoever wrote it may have intended it to be a response to the Crusade, and in particular the preaching of Bernard of Clairvaux. Departing from conventional interpretations of the figure of Antiochus as a prefiguration of the Antichrist, the homilist in Cod. 410 reimagines him as a particularly lethal demagogue whose appearance of learning will lure the faithful to their demise. |
