Summary: | The search for the unity of the church is foundational to the World Council of Churches. This vocation has led the council to form unity statements that describe the motivation, requirements, and goals of unity. Subsequently, many models of unity have been created to meet these requirements. Koinonia ecclesiology provides the possibility to overcome the problems that have hindered these models of unity from becoming a reality. The relational ontology of koinonia has much to offer the churches in their search for visible communion. At its best, koinonia could bring together different facets of the council's work: the doctrinal, the ethical, the diaconal, the liturgical, the structural, and the contextual. |
