Description
Summary:If the Christian churches are to engage with right-wing populism, they need to reflect on ecclesiology. The Vatican II Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, Lumen Gentium, sets out in section 13 its understanding of catholicity, which differs fundamentally from identitarian ideas in the following features: its reference to the unity of the whole of humanity, the formation of the 'people of God' by a call and not through 'birth', willingness to learn from strangers and what is strange, the internal plurality of the Church, the understanding of sacramentality as 'relatedness', concern for the salvation of all people ('recapitulation'), and a future-oriented understanding of 'homeland'. On this basis a new 'courage to be Catholic' can offer a creative alternative to right-wing populist attitudes.
