However, the origins in Spain and the various struggles over Catholicism and its culture in Spain prepared Ignatius and the early Jesuits quite well to face the challenges of the Reformation. This article digs underneath the solidly Catholic surface of Spain in the 16th century in order to point to various movements and phenomena which later on helped the Society of Jesus in the shaping of their approach to Lutheranism. |
