| Summary: | In medieval philosophy and theology, the passions of the soul are explored as part of ethics, as they influnce human action. The central problem is the relation between the passions and human reason. The present article explores this relation in the doctrines of Augustine, Thomas Aquinas and Meister Eckhart with a special focus on sadness (tristitia) and the role it plays in human beings and in Jesus Christ. Whereas Meister Eckhart is convinced that the passions disappear entirely with the mystical birth of a human being in God, Augustine and Thomas emphasize the role of sadness for the conversion of human beings and, in Christ, as a sign of God's solidarity with mankind. |
