Description
Summary:This is a response to Gorsuch's critique of the Altemeyer and Hunsberger (1992) article"Authoritarianism, Religious Fundamentalism, Quest, and Prejudice." Analysis of church attendance data from the original study indicated that there was no evidence that frequent church attenders were less prejudiced, We disagree that left-wing authoritarianism is a well-established fact. Furthermore, the recommendation that we use the Dogmatism scale to measure general authoritarianism, as well as the empirically important Intrinsic and Extrinsic scales is inappropriate in light of psychometric and conceptual difficulties with the scales and in light of problems with relevant findings. Finally, we address Gorsuch's suggestion that we are authoritarianly prejudiced, against those who object to homosexuality on moral grounds.
