Summary: | The hymns and prayers of the Ancient Near East and the Old Testament are unique testimonies of human self and world experience. The article starts with the question of how to compare these texts, which belong to different cultures, languages and times. In the second section, the subject is concretized and deepened on the one hand by means of hymns (Ps 36, Egyptian hymns of the New Kingdom) and, on the other hand, by means of pleas (Ps 38, Mesopotamian Suilla-prayers to Istar). Finally, basic rules for a thorough comparison of religious history are formulated. |
