Description
Summary:The American Churches witnessed the radicalizing of a significant and vocal segment of their clergy during the last decade. This essay seeks to understand this phenomenon by offering a typology of American religious movements. Our analysis reveals that the "new breed" represents the advent of a new social reform movement which shares some salient traits with reformers who were generated by the American Churches in previous eras of activism. This similarity renders possible both a more precise adjudication of the basic thrust of the "new breed" and a more exacting assessment of its probable impact on subsequent religious life in this society.
