| Summary: | This article focuses on an anti-Jesuit publication written by the eighteenth-century Swiss missionary, Abbé Pierre-François Favre, who had returned from Cochinchina (within present-day Vietnam) to a Europe where the Society of Jesus was being attacked over its activities in the Far East. This essay analyses not so much the disputes and various protagonists from the Cochinchinoise mission as much as how Favre's text -- whilst retaining characteristics specific to its missionary origin -- drew on the context of the Eastern missions with a view to contributing to the long-standing anti-Jesuit polemic literature of the period.
