Summary:It is remarkably difficult to form an overall assessment of the results of the ecumenical councils of the Catholic Church. The enormous signif icance to the life of the Church of these gatherings calls for penetrating sociological analysis for which specialized study is imperative. It is this that this study attempts to do. The varying types of ecumenical council, the result of recurring structural changes in the Church over the cen turies, can here be recognised.
