Summary: | The religious life of the canons and canonesses regular of the Chapter of Windesheim was centred around the eternal celebration of the Passio Christi, in which his death and resurrection formed the theatrical climax. The constant succession of the Hours defined the daily monastic rhythm. A crucial part of the Choir Office was reserved for the commemoration of the dead. Pro perpetua memoria, not only the deceased brothers and sisters, but also benefactors and benefactresses were remembered. Based on the necrology of the Windesheim Cannons of Our Dear Lady Ten Walle - in Elsegem near Oudenaarde in modern-day East Flanders - this article explores the way in which the canons and canonesses of Windesheim commemorated their deaths while at the same time building their group identity. |
