Summary: | In the recent decades, historiography on the Jewish presence in the medieval Southern Italy has opened a new targeted research perspectives aimed to clarifying the dynamics of settlement, the relationship between the dominant institutions and the Jewish minority, the level of social integation, the trades with a significant contribution to the reconstruction of economic and social history of certain regions. In this context, the sources for Southern Italy and in particular for Calabria and Sicily also permit a recovery of various aspects of the Jewish component in the hosting territory, realized in a double acquisition of habits and influences in the dominant society. This paper reconstructs the presence of Jews in Reggio Calabria in the fifteenth century before and after the edict of expulsion from Sicily in the 1492, tracing their settlement in the Reggio society in the relation to the royal policy and the ruling class. |
