Summary: | In this article I propose to contest the thesis presented by Alan Cameron in The Last Pagans of Rome according to which Macrobius Ambrosius Theodosius, the author of the Commentarii in Somnium Scipionis and the Saturnalia, belonged to the Christian religion. The test began by considering the way the Imperial orders against pagans were applied in the Western Roman Empire during the first half of the fifth century. As I proceeded, I noticed how questionable it was to infer Macrobius's religious beliefs from his name. The next step was to focus my attention firstly on the Saturnalia and its protagonists, all pagans and described by Macrobius with great praise, and on the absence of even the slightest mention of Christianity, something which in fact makes Cameron's thesis unacceptable. The analysis was followed up by trying to understand the reasons that made the author write this kind of work. (English) |
