Summary: | This article introduces performance analysis to the study of media and religion, and emphasizes concepts such as twice-behaved behavior, ritual performance, and transportation (Schechner & Appel, 1990). It applies Hall's (1980) concept of encoding to the vocal performance of Liriel Domiciano at the April 2004 General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). It considers assimilation and exotification in Western modernity and in Mormonism, the architecture of the LDS Conference Center, and the General Conference television broadcast as encoding Liriel's performance. |
