| Summary: | The Catholic canonical form of Esther is the Hebrew version and Greek additions, which are expansions of the book that occur throughout the story. Since the time of Jerome, the additions were gathered and placed after the Hebrew version in Catholic Bibles, where they lacked context. In the last hundred years they have been inserted throughout the Hebrew version. This integrated presentation of the book is problematic because the two versions do not have the same genre, have literary inconsistencies when combined, and do not have a standard format of verse identification. Both the traditional and the integrated presentation methods are hindrances to readers of the book of Esther and pose challenges to their comprehension of the text and, in turn, sound interpretations of it. In view of this, I propose that Catholic Bible translations include both the full Hebrew and full Greek versions of Esther. |
