Summary: | Global trends in population growth, in the development of technology and the economy, as well as the burden on the environment, make far-reaching changes likely in the coming decades. 'Humanity', the virtual collective of all human beings, consequently faces the immense and, in this form, novel task of finding ways to give these changes a 'humane' shape, without previously having a common understanding of what is human or humane. In this task of humane transformation cities have a particular role, both as focal points of global trends and agents of transformation. They have this role because of their great potential actively to shape the approaching changes. Non-governmental organisations such as Misereor must face the challenge of reflecting on their place, their procedures and their structures in the face of these changing parameters. |
